FRAP

FRAP stands for frenetic random activity period and is otherwise known as the dog zoomies.

How do you deal with your dog's energy spurts? I sometimes just sit back and watch.

Baron, our wild child (a nickname his breeder gave him) has somewhat grown out of the puppy zoomies. On occasion he will still grab a toy in his mouth and run, then bound off the back of the couch and continue full speed through the house. Back to careen off the back of the couch to gain more speed as he continues. He seriously thinks this is a three ring circus and he is the high flying act. We don't encourage this activity, but don't stop it either. When we see it coming we will go into the yard where he can run as fast as he wants, and is less likely to get hurt. If we will be away for awhile, we put a barrier in place so he does not have access to the couch. By keeping certain toys picked up he doesn't get the urge to run crazy in the house as much. AS most dogs do, Baron will always have a short burst of energy after a shower. This must be his way of getting rid of nervous energy that has been pent up during the shower process. This is a good time to offer a tasty treat to settle down with.
