Dogs That dig Are Not Bad

Here are a few tips on how to stop your dog from digging. You can keep your yard looking neat and your pet happy. Starting with a few changes and an understanding of why they dig will help you solve the problem.

Giving your dog positive attention can help a lot. A simple thing like pats on the back, ear scratches or brushing and allowing them to sit next to you will show them that you value and love them.

1. Dogs will sometimes dig because they are bored. They have found this activity to release pent up energy. Adding more exercise to their day may curb their digging ritual. Find a favorite game that you both love. Take longer walks that also include running, chasing balls or a frisbee and hiding treats for them to find. Offer chew bones once in a while.

2. Block their digging. If they dig in the same area a good solution would be to place chicken wire just under the surface. You can still plant in that area by cutting out holes to fit in plants. Stones, pavers or garden rock can also deter digging. Sometimes planting shrubs or different plants can change their environment enough to stop them.

3. There is a good chance they hear little critters under ground. Getting rid of these pests will stop their need to hunt for them.

5. If they are a breed that just loves to dig place a sand box in the far corner of the yard. Choose one that has a cover to keep out wandering cats.

6. Another solution for dogs that like to dig to expose cool dirt to lay in. Try a cooling mat for them to lounge on. It will show them that they have a special place to be.

Hopefully these tips can help change your dogs digging behavior.
